BOOKS - CLASSICS

What?We read and discuss classic books. During the last year we have read and discussed eight books, ranging from Dickens (“A Christmas Carol”) to modern classics like “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists” was hard going and many of our members did not enjoy Le Carre’s “Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy”. Easier reads were du Maurier’s Rebecca”, Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” and Graham Greene’s “The Heart of the Matter” and last summer we read the very long “The Way we Live Now” by Anthony Trollop.

BRIDGE - PLAYERS - MONDAY

What? This is a mixed ability group playing Chicago Bridge. Most of our members are experienced players but we have (and we want to encourage) less experienced players who are now competent improvers.

By popular request, every other week we now play Gentle Duplicate Bridge but the scores are not recorded and this is not a highly competitive group.

The group is still suitable for those who simply want to play Bridge socially and to gain experience and confidence by playing regularly.

Most of our members play with a regular partner and most use the Acol bidding conventions published by the English Bridge Union. Knowledge of basic modern Acol is therefore quite important.

No tuition is given and those joining must have knowledge and competency in both the etiquette and technical aspects of the modern game.

Beginners should have completed a formal beginner’s class with U3A or elsewhere. But we are a friendly group and if help is needed there are experienced players here willing to offer advice.

Sociability and flexibility are also important as, from time to time, to accommodate odd numbers of players (not divisible by four) you may be asked to play three-handed bridge or to temporarily partner with any other member of the group.

PHOTOGRAPHY 1

What?We are a happy, vibrant group of photographers who get together to learn and discuss all things photographic. Our depth of knowledge is taken from the group membership and all are encouraged to participate. Technical aspects of photography are always covered and individual members try to help those with particular problems. We try to organise the occasional field trip and associate it with work done at meetings. This group is mostly for members with DSLR type cameras, although learning how to use your camera is more important than what type you have - you can get fantastic shots with just a compact. An annual exhibition of work is becoming a permanent feature of the group and all are encouraged to make submissions for this.

This sport is particularly suited to those for whom traditional raquet sports are proving a little too strenuous. The emphasis is on fun while helping to keep you fit as well
