Speaker: Christine Rhodes
The Wrecking and Recovery of the sailing ship Rooswijk – A tale of tragedy and treasure’.
The Rooswijk was a Dutch trading ship which sank in a fierce storm in 1740 and lay undisturbed on the Goodwin Sands until the wreck was discovered in 2005.
Christine, the Group Leader of our Archaeology group, is also a volunteer with Historic England at their conservation labs at Fort Cumberland, Southsea, and with the Nautical Archaeology Society, also based there. She worked on the hands-on conservation of a large number of the artefacts from the Rooswijk wreck, many of which are fascinating everyday objects used by the crew.
The meeting will start at 2:00 pm and there will be a refreshment break
The Travel and Tourism team will also be at the meeting so you can book a short holiday, day trip or theatre trip or buy a secondhand book.
